When I think summer, I think picnics, trips to the beach, baseball games, amusement parks, and of course, my favorite summer treat, fresh watermelon!!
This week, Avery and I decided to do a little tie-dyeing! I had seen the one-step tie dye kits at Target, and thought it would be a fun activity that we could do together, outside! I grabbed a kit and some t-shirts, and we headed home to get to work!
While Avery was working on her shirts, I started thinking of some cute tees that I could make for her. I decided to make her a watermelon tie-dye tee that she could wear to an upcoming picnic!!
The shirt came out so cute that I thought I’d share this simple tutorial with you, fabulous readers!
Step 1: Gather your supplies, and prep the area. You’ll want to work on a surface that you don’t care about staining. I used an old piece of scrap wood that my husband had laying around.
Step 2: Add your “seeds” using your fabric marker. They don’t have to be perfect. A lot of seeds or just a few, draw them on wherever you’d like!
Step 3: Using rubber bands, tie off the section you want pink and the section you want green, leaving a space in between. I left about an inch.
Step 4: Prepare your dye according to the package instructions.
Step 5: Start dyeing your shirt! I started with pink, then did the green. Make sure you really saturate your shirt for a more vibrant color. (You could also try the dip-dye method if you’re using a larger quantity of dye, by putting the dye into a bucket, and dipping the shirt in)
Don’t worry if you get a little bleed through the rubber bands! Step 6: Wrap your shirt in plastic wrap and let it sit for 6-8 hours for the most vibrant color.
Step 7: Rinse your shirt until the water runs clear, then follow the washing directions on your dye. (The Tulip dye I used suggests that you wash on the hottest setting with a very small amount of detergent)
Step 8: Wear your shirt with pride!
Isn’t it cute? I think this shirt is PERFECT for summer!!!
Avery wore it for a fun little picnic at the park!
Of course, we ate watermelon!!
And enjoyed every bite!!
Come back on Wednesday to see how Avery’s tie dye shirts came out, in next week’s Wordless Wednesday!
