Dinner Is Saved with Peapod!

Disclosure: #ad  I was given a gift code to facilitate this review. All opinions of the Peapod Service are my own.

Hey friends!  It’s been awhile… Things have been pretty crazy over here the past 6 or so months.  Our family has experienced so many changes, and challenges and unfortunately this blog took a backseat to everything else.  But, things are settling down (sort of!) and I am so happy to be back!

One major change is that I very recently accepted a NEW JOB! I’ll talk about it more in the future, but it’s awesome, and I am so happy! It’s a “normal” job in that I actually have to change out of my pajamas and go to an office Monday – Friday, 9 – 5.  It’s a huge change after working from home or the past 7 years, but I am soooo ready for it.

As ready as I am, there is the little worry in my mind about how the heck I am going to do EVERYTHING?!

Take a look at our weekly schedule:

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
Sarah Baseball Work til 5pm Work til 3pm Work til 5pm Work til 5pm Work til 5pm Baseball
Dave Baseball Work til 2:30 Baseball practice 7pm Work til 2:30 Work til 2:31 Work til 2:32 Work til 2:33 Baseball
Avery Baseball Coding til 5:30 Dance 4:30 – 6pm Dance til 5:00 Baseball practice: 6 – 7pm Nothing? Maybe? That can’t be right. Baseball
Girl Scouts 5:45 – 7:15pm Baseball Game 5:30 – 7pm

OK, soooo…. WHEN DO I MAKE AND EAT DINNER?!?!

I guess we can just eat on Friday, and weekends when Dave doesn’t have night games.

I mean, Dave will be home, and he is more than capable of cooking (full disclosure: he is the one who cooks most of the time!)  But it feels like we won’t have any time now that I won’t be home until later. And when the heck will we do our shopping?

That’s where Peapod comes in!  I’ve blogged about Peapod before, and how easy it made party planning. I am going to start taking my own advice, and let someone else do the heavy lifting for me. (Literally)

Peapod is SUPER convenient and easy! I can order everything we need for the week while on my lunch break, and schedule a delivery time that works for me.54433318_570651363446645_6234251274750001152_n

Since Dave was home this week, I chose a delivery time right in the middle of the day, so he could be the one to put all the groceries away! Ha! 55546961_1214622135366021_7038730191530622976_n

I love that Peapod sends you alerts so you know exactly when to expect your delivery. It’s nice that you don’t have to wait around all day, looking out the window, dreaming about groceries…

peapod

OK, so we all know about the convenient delivery and pick-up options. But wait, there’s MORE! Did you know that you can order delicious pre-made meals?  The chicken parm is really good, and is a definite favorite in our family! The pre-made meals are perfect for nights when I just do not have time to prepare even the simplest of meals. I can grab one of these from the fridge and just heat it up! peapod-2

Peapod also offers a variety of affordable meal kits (many are less than $5 per serving) that contain pre-measured, pre-cut and pre-washed ingredients for meals made in 30 minutes or less!!  I was really excited to try these out as we’ve always wanted to use meal kits, but never wanted to be locked into a monthly plan, or get stuck with meals we really weren’t interested in.
peapod-3

I ordered the Beef and Broccoli kit, and the Upscale Beef Stroganoff!  It is so simple, as the kit includes all the ingredients you need, portioned and clearly labeled. The recipe is easy to follow, and doesn’t require any advanced cooing skills. peapod-4

The Beef Stroganoff was SO GOOD! And it made 6 servings so we had more than enough for dinner and lunches the following day! I love the ease of having these meals ready to go in the fridge. Dave and I can easily grab them and whip it up quickly for a hearty meal before practice!peapod-5 Peapod makes shopping so easy, not just with delivery or pick-up but with other special features like:

  • Express Shop: Quickly locate and select all ingredients for a specific recipe, meal plan, etc. Just type your list into the notepad; click Start Shopping and the products matching your first item will be displayed.
  • Order Genius: Auto-fill your cart with the items you buy most frequently and even recall shopping history from Stop & Shop and Giant loyalty reward cards.
  • Sort Feature: Find products with the best price, to meet your dietary needs, even see which product is most popular. Select your sort preference from the drop-down box at the top of every page. Click the Save Sort link and your products will always be sorted that way.
  • Filter Feature: Filter to only see the products that meet your needs, whether you’re looking for dairy-free cereal or peanut-free snacks.

Peapod has no required membership fee, but they do offer an optional subscription service called PodPass which gives subscribers unlimited free delivery and pick-up for one low price with 3 month, 6 month and 12 month options! Standard delivery fees range from $6.95-$9.95

So here I am, having a lazy Sunday, not rushing around the market trying to figure out what the heck we will eat this week, along with half the state. Because I know that Peapod has me covered!

BOSTON/MA FRIENDS!!! From now until the end of March, I am offering a code: FRESH50 to my followers for $25 off your first two orders and 1-year free delivery with a PodPass subscription!  That’s an amazing deal!! Don’t miss out and head to Peapod right now to grab your groceries for the week!

“Get your dead leafs! Dead Leafs! Free Leafs! Come and get ’em! Get your dead leafs here!!”

We were outside working on the front yard. Dave and I were weeding and planting flowers.  Avery was trying to sell dead leaves to our neighbors and becoming increasingly upset when nobody stopped for their free “leafs”

“What about a Lemonade stand?” I asked.  “I guess, maybe, but I don’t understand why nobody wants these leafs!” Avery said, sadly.

So, we got to work planning a Lemonade stand, which turned into a whole party with different flavors of lemonade and snacks and decor!

First we had to get the supplies.  I had so much running around to do between summer camp, work, picking up decor and supplies, that I wasn’t sure when I’d have the time to get to the market. Fortunately, a couple weeks ago, my friend Kate told me about how she uses Peapod  and how it has changed her life.

I decided to give it a try, and I was really blown away! It’s so easy, and convenient!

You just sign up on the website, and start shopping! Shop with peapodOne of my favorite features is the Express Shop feature! You just type your list of  ingredients for a specific recipe, meal plan, etc.   into the notepad; click Start Shopping and the products matching your first item will be displayed!  There is also the Order Genius feature which will auto-fill your cart with the items you buy most frequently and even recall shopping history from Stop & Shop and Giant loyalty reward cards! It’s easy, and very cool.  You receive the same discounts as you would by shopping in-store, and you can even double your manufacturer coupons (up to $.99!)peapod checkoutOnce you’re done shopping, you choose either store pick-up or home delivery! Since I knew I’d be short on time, I tried the delivery option. I was abe to select the day and time window that would work best for me!  Our delivery arrived, and while the driver offered to bring everything in to our house, Dave and I met him at the truck and carried the bags in.

I should also note that when you sign up you receive $20 off your first order (over $75) and FREE delivery for the first 60 days! Peapod is a simple and effortless shopping experience that meets all your weekly grocery needs! It is perfect for busy moms–because we all know that it can be pure torture going grocery shopping with a gaggle of exhausted or hyper kids!

Fuze Tea Minute Maid LemonadeThe key items for our party were Minute Maid® Lemonade and FUZE® tea 12 packs–our go-to summer refreshments!  I also ordered fresh veggies, pita chips, and pre-made appetizers to help make this party very easy to put together.

Avery was excited to help with the decor, so I let her help make the sign. I purchased large white letter stickers, which she colored in pink and yellow, and then stuck on to the banner! lemonade standWe hung it up along our fence with a few pretty pink and yellow fans.

We set out the food, drinks, and paper products (in pink and yellow, of course!) And I even picked some lilies from our garden! It was perfect timing for the pink and white Star Gazers to bloom! decor

The table was set with pink gingham and yellow polka dot fabric and a strip of wide burlap ribbon to give it a rustic country feel. lemons gratitudeI found this cute lemon sign for 90% off and thought it would be perfect for this theme!  Lemonade stand party

I set out three different flavors of lemonade for guests to choose from (or try all three!) and used little chalkboard signs to label each one. The flavors were all perfect for kids and adults!lemonde bar

We had a Cranberry Limeade Spritzer, Mint Lemon Tea, and Strawberry Kiwi Lemonade! Delicious and summery!lemonades

The glasses could be garnished with fresh fruit or mint, making simple drinks appear fancy and fun! Mint Lemon Tea

This party was so easy to put together. The color scheme was fun and would work well for a summer picnic or a birthday party for kids or adults! flowersThe little details really make all the difference. The flowers, signage, pitcher filled with lemons… All were simple and inexpensive but gave the party a little something extra!

Orange Pomander Holiday Dessert Party Orange & White Holiday Dessert Party

How did the holiday season sneak up on me?I feel so unprepared this year, and have been frantically running around trying to get everything done, on top of all of Avery’s school & activities (including a dance recital last month, and another one this weekend!) and work! It’s rush, rush, rush, go, go, go! And I am feeling worn out and run down. Not good at this time of year, where feeling my best and being on top of my game is really important!

One of my favorite things about the holidays is gathering with friends and family for parties and meals. We were planning a visit to my parent’s house for an overnight, and I decided it would be nice to have a little dessert party!  I wanted to do something that mixed tradition with something new! Our family loves making Orange Pomanders (And you can read my post about what they are and how to make them, HERE) so I thought Pomanders would make great party decor. But to give the party a FRESH theme, I wanted the treats to be be made with fresh oranges! Nothing like a good boost of Vitamin C to get us through the long New England winter!

orange-pomander-christmas-treeMy parents are both nurses (well, my dad is “retired” but still works here and there) and they really need to make sure their immune systems are doing their job! I thought a wonderful way to give us all a boost would be with Mulled Orange Juice!

mulled-orange-juice-emergencrecipesAdding Emergen-C gives us the essential B Vitamins that enhance energy naturally* without caffeine! Just what we need this time of year!mulled-orange-juiceI love mulled drinks and had recently tried a mulled orange cider at a conference, so I wanted to try my hand at my own version! This recipe couldn’t be any easier.

You will need:

  • Orange Juice (64 oz carton, or fresh squeezed!)
  • 2-3 Cinnamon sticks
  • 8-10 Whole cloves
  • Emergen-C Super Orange

mulled-orange-juice-recipeAdd juice, cinnamon sticks, and cloves to a large sauce pan and simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Strain or remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks and pour into mugs. emergenc-vitamin-c-supplementAdd one packet of Emergen-C Super Orange to each 4-6oz serving. Serve warm. recipes-using-emergencAdding Emergen-C to this tasty Mulled Orange drink is an easy and delicious way to take vitamins that are important to a healthy lifestyle. And we all feel better taking Emergen-C during the winter months because our health is important to us! And I can pick it up at Walmart, so I never worry about running out!

For the place settings at the party, I used flannel napkins, wrapped in gold leather ribbon, with a sprig of fresh pine.  I made small pomanders with clementines, and used the cloves to make each guests initial! (A packet (or more!) of Emergen-C is a great party favor!)orange-christmas-treeMy Pomander Christmas tree made a great centerpiece, lit with tiny fairy lights!orange-cakeAnd then there was the cake!  Ok, I’m going to let you in on my secret!  I rarely bake cakes (Honestly, our oven is broken, so baking isn’t even an option right now) I buy plain, basted cakes from the bakery, or the market, and then I go to town making them my own! This cake was a simple market cake, with whipped cream frosting. I added slices of fresh orange, and cinnamon, and it took it from boring, to beautiful in less than 5 minutes! And the flavors were delicious! orange-pomander-decorations orange-cinnamon-creme-cakeThis party easily moves from day to night! During the day the colors are fresh and bright, but once the sun sets, it transforms to warm and cozy! So, you can use this same theme for a brunch, a lunch, or a dinner! cozy-winter-dinner-partyThe glow of the Christmas lights, the candles, and my parent’s faux-woodstove gave this such a wonderful feel! orange-pomander-tree orange-place-settingI used a long piece of flannel fabric as a table cloth, and topped it with a runner of white fur to give it something extra, something a bit unexpected. I love the way it looked! orange-white-winter-partyI topped the fur with fresh pine, and used slabs of wood as serving plates for the cookies and cake. Adding to the rustic feel that I love! winter-drink-mulled-orange

Easy Homemade Apple Fruit Leather

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Mott’s®. The opinions and text are all mine. #SecretLifeOfMotts

Easy Homemade Apple Fruit LeatherThe Secret Life of Pets © 2016 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.

It’s Summer!!!! And that means so many activities on the go. For Avery, that includes Summer Camp!!  My girl has been really enjoying her camp experiences this summer. I have so many fond memories of my own camp experiences and I’m so glad I’ve been able to share this with her! She’s making new friends, learning new things, facing new challenges, and having so much fun.

While her camp is only half day, she still has to pack a lunch and snacks. Her camp is “nut free” so we look for snacks she enjoys, that are safe for the other campers, and options that are nutritious.

Motts Applesauce and Apple JuiceThe Secret Life of Pets © 2016 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.

I let Avery help choose her snacks (with guidance and veto power, of course). Giving her options has helped her feel like she has more control of her food which in turn, eliminates some mealtime battles, and it gives me the chance to help teach her about making smart snack choices for nutritious habits!!

In the snack aisle at Target she was immediately drawn to the Mott’s® Applesauce products featuring The Secret Life of Pets. (To say that she is OUT OF HER MIND EXCITED about this movie would be an understatement.) “Can we PLEASE get these pouches? PUH-LEASE!!!” she begged in the aisle. I let her beg a little, but inside I was thinking “MOM WIN!!” She wasn’t asking for cookies and candy, she was choosing a more nutritious option. And a brand that I trust, and grew up with in my own lunch box!

Motts available at targetThe Secret Life of Pets © 2016 Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.

I let her choose a few items, and she grabbed the Mott’s Applesauce Snack and Go 4 Packs in Original & Cinnamon and Mott’s Applesauce 6PK Sauce Cups also Original & Cinnamon flavors. We also picked up a pack of Mott’s 100% Juice 8oz Single Serve Apple Juice!

And if you love a good deal as much as I do, check out these great deals on Cartwheel:

Our lunch box snack mission was almost complete, but I felt like she needed something else.  Avery often asks for fruit snacks or rolls, and I very rarely say yes. But, I wanted something else to have on hand for snack, so I decided to try making fruit leather at home!

It is EASY, and you really only need one ingredient! Applesauce!! (You can add in any other pureed fruit you’d like!)

Here’s what you need:

Applesauce – I used 4 Mott’s Applesauce Snack and Go pouches (two cinnamon and two natural)

Baking sheet/pan

Silicone mat (This is optional–if you don’t have one, you can line your baking sheet with parchment paper)

Parchment paper

Kitchen Shears

Tape (To seal the rolls)

Step 1: Spread your applesauce out on your silicone mat. You want to make sure it is even, and about 1/4 in thick.

Step 2: Set your oven to 150*F and put the pan in to dehydrate for 6-10 hours

Step 3: Remove from oven when the top is no longer tacky.

Step 4: Allow the fruit leather to cool, and then slowly peel it off the mat, and place on a sheet of parchment paper

Step 5: Using kitchen shears, cut your fruit leather into long strips (At this time, you could also use a small cookie cutter to cut shapes into the leather!)

Step 6: Roll up, and seal with tape (I used washi tape, for a fun look)

Eat & Enjoy!!! I store ours in a sealed container in the fridge.

Since it takes such a long time for the applesauce to dehydrate, I’d recommend making as many batches as you can, at one time.

Avery LOVED the fruit leather, and so did I! We’re already planning our next batch. We’re going to use the Mott’s Applesauce in Mixed Berry and Mango Peach!!

OK, now that we’ve got our snack situation under control, let’s talk about the movie!! As I mentioned, Avery is excited to see The Secret Life of Pets (If we’re being honest, I am super excited, too!!) Well, you know what is even more exciting??  Getting those movie tickets for FREE!  Yup! I said free movie tickets!!

When you purchase any 3 Mott’s Juices or Applesauce you can receive a Free Child’s Ticket*(Mott’s on pack offer) for The Secret Life of Pets from Fandango (*$9 child admission, restrictions apply)!!  Amazing, right??  But wait, there’s more!!

If you purchase 5 Mott’s Juices or Applesauce not only will you receive the Free Child’s Ticket, but you’ll also get an additional $8 movie voucher!! The process to redeem your ticket/voucher is SIMPLE.

Shandy Sangria - Summer Shandy & Citrus

Remember my post about how a tree fell on our house?  Well, ya know what?  Having a tree fall on your house is STRESSFUL! Really.

After the long week we have had, I wanted us to have a nice evening to just hang out and relax! I had stopped by Price Chopper for some delicious Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy and  Grapefruit Shandy and decided to make something special. Leinenkugel's Shandy and Gold Peak TeaI’m not really a wine drinker, I’m more of a beer & whiskey girl, but I do love Sangria. I thought it would be fun to try a beer version of the classic summer drink!  A Beer Sangria, or Shandy Sangria, or … SHANGRIA!!  Yes! I shall call it a Shangria!!

It was nice to take some time to ourselves without thinking about the tree, the hole in the roof, the insurance, the neighbor who is angry about branches in her yard (that fell from HER tree, but she prefers to blame our tree, two houses down) etc., etc.  Leinenkugel Shandy SangriaThe Shangria is the perfect summer drink! It is light, refreshing, and delicious!  It was like summer in a glass! Citrus Beer - Shandy Sangria - Summer beverage

If you haven’t tried Leinenkugel’s Shandy you need to!!  Both the Summer Shandy and the Grapefruit Shandy are delicious, and we will definitely be buying them again!

10 Minute S'mores Bites #LetsMakeSmores

Growing up, camping was big part of my summer.  I went to Girl Scout camp and went camping with family and friends in Lake George, and other spots in the Adirondacks. We camped in tents and pop up campers, and sometimes in cabins! I loved sleeping outside, swimming in the lake, hiking, and sitting around the fire telling stories and playing games.  I also loved the food!! We made whole meals in foil “packets” cooked over the camp fire, roasted hotdogs on sticks we found on our hikes, and made “Toad in a hole” for breakfast. But my favorite camp food has always been s’mores!

I had been talking to a friend recently who just took her 3 year old camping for the first time and it got me thinking about how much I want to take Avery camping. Not just for the outdoors experiences (which we all love) but also because camping gives you a chance to unplug.  You don’t have a choice if you go to a more remote location without cell service, or electrical supply. I was thinking about how nice it would be to have a few days to just hang out as a family without our phones, computers, and ipads.

Unfortunately, our weekends are jam packed with conferences for me, work for Dave, and birthday parties for Avery, so we can’t go camping any time soon. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend!

I decided to have a Camp “in” right in our living room. We put our phones away, shut down the computers, unplugged the TV, and just had quality time together!

We read stories and played board games, and of course, we ate s’mores! (Because every day should be a S’mores Day!)

Indoor camping fun Games and s'mores

Since we were indoors, we couldn’t exactly build a campfire in the middle of the living room. Well, not a real one, anyway! So I quickly cut pieces out of foam core, painted, and assembled out own little faux-fire! It must have been realistic enough (and we must be teaching her well!) because Avery kept telling us that she couldn’t go near the fire, or she would get a burn!

I decided to make s’mores bites! I had made these for Avery’s camping themed birthday party and they were a huge hit! They are so easy to make and take less than 10 minutes!

s'mores ingredients

Ingredients:

  • Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars
  • Honey Maid Graham Cracker Squares
  • Kraft’s Jet Puffed Marshmallows

Start by prepping your ingredients.

Delicious s'mores ingredients

You’ll need to chop up your Hershey’s bars and crush your Graham Crackers.

broken chocolate crushed graham

Next, you will melt your chocolate. I put mine in for 30 seconds, then removed it and stirred it up well. I then popped it back in for about 10 seconds, and at that point it was perfectly melted!

To make your S’mores bites, you just dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and then dip it into the graham cracker crumbs.

Dipped in chocolate

Place on a plate (if you can keep yourself from just eating it right then and there) and you’re done!

S'mores Bites with Hershey's Chocolate, Jet-Puffed Marshmallows and Honey Maid Graham Crackers

These bites are delicious served warm, or chilled if you need to make them ahead of time!

Simple s'mores bites - 10 minute recipe Roasting marshmallows over a DIY fake camp fire

You don’t always need a campfire to make S’mores, you can use the microwave, too!

These S’mores Bites were perfect for our family camp in and it was the perfect way for our family  to unplug and enjoy our time free of phones, and other devices!

Easy Indoor s'mores bites

I’ve shared how we create fun, tasty, and memorable experiences with S’mores. I’d love to hear your favorite way to make and enjoy S’mores!
