I’ve been blogging about baseball a lot lately. I think it’s because it is ALL CONSUMING and is basically my entire life at the moment. This post is a little bit about baseball and a whole lot about food!
Dave’s favorite baseball concession foods is sausage and peppers while I’m more of a hot dog, pretzels, maybe some ice cream, is that popcorn? I’ll have that, too. Wait…do they have fried dough? Oh yeah, I’m gonna need to go ahead and have one of those, kind of gal.
Because I am such an incredibly wonderful wife, I thought I’d make Dave an awesome dinner – a twist on his favorite fare. Sausage & Peppers Sloppy Joes!
I love that this recipe is easy, and I can make it ahead of time and freeze to have on hand for those busy nights running from school and work to the baseball field for practice or games.
And on those busy nights, the last thing I want to do is dishes. Oh, who am I kidding? I NEVER want to do dishes.
Fortunately for me, and those like me, Dixie Ultra® helps me Skip the dishes with their heavy-duty plates and bowls. I can spend time with friends and family, not my sponge!
While doing our daily shopping at Target, Avery spotted the Dixie Ultra plates on an end cap and commented on the “Beautiful” design! I agreed that they were really pretty, and grabbed a few packs of the 20 count 10 1/16″ Paper Plates and the 30 count 8.5″ Paper Plates. These lovely new co-create plate designs are available exclusively at Target!
Not only are these plates super strong (10” plates can handle up to 2 lbs of food!) but they are also microwave safe, recyclable, and cut resistant. Making them our go-to for our busy summer nights!!
You’ll also be happy to know that you can Save 10% on Dixie Ultra at Target 5/25-6/8 by using the Cartwheel App!!
Now, let’s talk about those sloppy joes, shall we?
I remember every Thursday in preschool was Sloppy Joe day. I looked forward to that day each week. But, guess what? I haven’t had a sloppy joes since! Seriously, it’s been 30 years! I thought it was time to change that. But I didn’t want any old ordinary joes. Nope. I was making Sausage & Peppers Sloppy Joes!
Here’s what you’ll need
- 1 pound of ground sausage (italian, mild, or spicy will work!)
- 3 Bell peppers
- 1/2 a large onion
- 1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (8oz) diced tomatoes
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 cloves of fresh garlic (chopped)
- Fresh basil, Italian seasoning, and salt & pepper to taste
Step 1- Brown the sausage with a little bit of oil, and set aside
Step 2 – Add Tomato sauce, tomatoes, peppers and onions into the pan
Step 3 – Add brown sugar, garlic, basil and seasoning
Step 4 – Stir, and let simmer until veggies start to soften.
Step 5 – Add your browned sausage into the pan, and let it simmer a bit longer, until everything is fully cooked.
Step 6 – Take in the amazingly delicious aroma…
Step 7 – Now, immediately add this deliciousness to hard rolls, top with shredded cheese (we used Italian Blend) or Parmesan and serve
(If you’re making this ahead of time to freeze for later, allow to cool, then put into a freezer bag or container and freeze. You can easily thaw and reheat later!)
Let’s just take a moment to admire these Sloppy Joes…Don’t they look delicious? The sausage and peppers would also be really good in a bread bowl, or even served over pasta… But, they are amazing as Sloppy Joes. (Ask Dave, he ate 7 of them) I served the sloppy joes on our new Dixie Ultra plates, and I have got to say, I was IMPRESSED! They are made with FlexProof™ Technology and have a Soak Proof Shield™ that can stand up to the heaviest, messiest foods you can dish out.
LOOK! Look at that one-handed hold! I don’t know how much those sloppy joes weigh, but they are heavy, and seriously messy, and those plates were like “Yeah, we got this!” The sauce didn’t soak through, the plates didn’t collapse under the weight. It was pretty awesome! These Sausage and Peppers Sloppy Joes are definitely going to be making it into our dinner rotation pretty frequently. It’s only been 2 days and Dave is already asking when I’m going to make them again!
