We Got Our License To Spill

Avery is walking now!!  YAY! It’s fantastic, the only issue is, we have all hardwood floors in our house. They’re great, and beautiful, and so easy to take care of, but the *THUD* of Avery’s little skull smacking against the oak is not so great. Every day the girl has another bump or bruise. The thing is, with a child and a dog, I’ve always worried about having carpets.  You know how messy kids and dogs (and husbands) can be!!

Fast forward to today. Avery and I headed out to Foxboro (or Foxborough, whichever you prefer) to “The House That Brady Built” for the New England Home show. We walked through row upon row of windows, siding, doors and gutters. We dodged people trying to get us to re-finish our basement, and insulate our walls. I even encountered a woman selling hair straightening irons, who told me that this “all in one” tool could also curl my baby-fine, stick-straight locks.  (Sorry girl, I’ve had this hair for 31 years, and unless you’re some sort of sorceress, there is no way you can get this mane to hold a curl. And why are you at a home show?)

Anyway, we made our way towards the back to find THIS:

Mohawk Flooring’s License to Spill van, and Boston’s own Taniya Nayak (You may know Taniya from various HGTV and Food Network programs, including House Hunters of Vacation, Designed to Sell and Restaurant Impossible.  She has Mohawk flooring product in her Boston condo.)

We headed over to learn more about this “Carpet Showdown”

We spoke to the Mohawk Flooring reps and learned all about their SmartStrand carpet. SmartStrand has permanent stain and soil resistance that will never wear off. Most carpets have stain and soil treatments that are applied topically to the fiber. Over time, in the face of foot traffic, and due to wear and tear, the topically applied stain and soil treatment wears off. This can leave ordinary carpets looking worn out and dirty sooner than you might expect for such a large purchase. With SmartStrand, you don’t have to worry about that. For as long as you have the carpet, it will have stain protection because it is built into the carpet fiber itself.

And…..it is made, in part, from CORN!  How cool is that?

SmartStrand carpet is made with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer, which is made in part from actual corn—the same kind you grow in your garden. It also uses less energy to produce. It marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability and stain protection, while also making less of an environmental impact. From field to floor, SmartStrand carpet is the perfect solution to life’s unpredictable moments and environmental concerns.

  • 37% of Sorona is made from renewable resources instead of more limited petroleum ingredients
  • The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon
  • Production of seven square yards of 40-ounce SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona carpet saves enough energy to equal one gallon of gasoline
  • Production of SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona emits 63% less greenhouse gas*
  • All environmental claims are certified in writing

As compared to production of nylon 6

This alone was a HUGE selling point for me, but then we started talking about how easy it is to clean, and I was ready to hand over my credit card on the spot!

SmartStrand is extremely easy to clean. Say goodbye to carpet cleaners! You don’t have to use any harsh chemicals or carpet cleaners to remove stains from SmartStrand carpet. All you need is a dishrag, some warm water, and mild detergent, like dish soap. Even tough stains, like ketchup, red Kool-Aid, EVEN RED WINE will clean easily out of SmartStrand carpet. You hear THAT moms??  It gets out RED WINE!! Almost everyone has a flooring horror story, but with SmartStrand there’s no need to worry. This carpet is rated #1 in consumer satisfaction.

We watched a demo, where grape juice was spilled all over a carpet sample.  With just some plain water, a cloth, and very minimal elbow grease, the grape juice came right out!

After the demo we had the opportunity to meet Taniya Nyak and JD Roberto (Host of Next Great Family Band and the nationally syndicated Better talk show)

Avery and JD Roberto from Better TV
They were both extremely sweet and gracious, and took time to chat with Avery (who is really racking up the celebrity meetings!)

It was really fun to watch them filming, live for Better TV!

We also go to hear from Chef Ben Lacey of Tastings Wine Bar and Bistro about his delicious Boston Baked Beans! (We all know how messy they can be!)

Before we left we were given a few sample squares of the SmartStrand carpet, to take home and experiment with. I wouldn’t wait to get home and make a mess!

As soon as I got home, I put Avery down for her nap and got to work.  Rummaging through our fridge, I found a few things that create NASTY stains.  Ketchup, raspberry jelly, tomato sauce and bbq sauce (I didn’t have any red wine!  Only white!) Then I got to work doing what most moms fear most.  Staining white carpets!!

I made the stains, let them sit for a little bit, then cleaned them using only water and a sponge……

Check it out!

Mohawk Flooring's SmartStrand carpet! Stains come out with just water! No harsh cleaning products needed! #LicenseToSpill

The ketchup was the easiest, followed by raspberry jam. The tomato sauce and bbq took a little more work, but I’m sure with a little dish soap it would come right out!

I was amazed!!  This carpet is unbelievable, and I truly wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t done this test myself!

And, if you have pets, you don’t have to worry about pet stains. The folks at Mohawk put this carpet to the ultimate test.  The brought it to the Birmingham Zoo, where SmartStrand carpeting was put down in Ricko the Rhino’s enclosure. Seriously. Ricko stomped his muddy feet and….uhm…did his…business…on the carpet for two weeks!  And guess what? Just some hot water, and no harsh chemical cleaners and that carpet was just like new!  Don’t believe me?  Check out this video!

If this carpet can stand up to Ricko, it can definitely stand up to Daisy!
My next step is to convince Dave that we NEED this carpet in our living room!!

I love the smart strand (light!) carpet we put in the bedrooms two years ago, and I’ve only used water to clean it. Even the lipstick my girls got into :) Love your stain test Sarah, what a visual! looks like that event was a blast.

  7. Great post! I felt like I was on a little adventure! Love the carpet. Love your “cleaning test”. I would definitely consider this based on your review. Thanks for sharing!

  8. This reminded me of when we used to do science projects at school and used to test out things like laundry detergent. Love it! LOL. This is great to know for our next house, where we will probably include carpeting in some areas.

awesome! Although I will always remain a fan of no carpet – so much better for my allergies. But man, this would be awesome especially in apartments so that it lasts longer between tenants too.

  10. This would be great on our stairs, which currently have carpet and get so gross so easily because of the foot traffic!

  11. This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing. Our new house is going to have hardwoods, but I know that with the kids we are going to need to put some carpets down. I’ll definitely be checking this out. :)

  12. My kids need this in their bedrooms, the carpets are a MESS. They should make furniture out of that stuff.

  13. I love that they tested it out at a zoo. Too funny! This sounds like an awesome carpet choice. Will definitely keep it in mind if we put carpets in a future house!

I can’t even imagine giving a Rhino carpeting? That is the true test of a product. It sounds like an episode of Dirty Jobs. ;)

  15. Oh the head thud!! I remember it well.

These carpets are pretty amazing. And? I’m jealous you got to meet that designer! She is one of my favorites.

  16. Wow! I can’t get over the stains and how they came out! Sounds like a winner to me :)

  17. We have a Mohawk area rug and love it! On a side note, I have uncurlable hair. Until I got my Nume wand….might wanna try it!

  18. Looks like a great show! With all of these boys and dogs, we get stains often. I can’t believe how great the stains came out!
