Black & White Halloween Movie Party

Sing it with me… It’s the most wonderful time of the year…. That’s right! It’s Halloween! You guys know how much I LOVE this time of year! We’ve got our yard decorated with our growing “family” of skeletons, we have our costumes ready to go, and we’ve made fun plans for trick-or-treating, and we had a fun Halloween party when my cousin came to town! Yeah, this is OUR season!

Let’s talk about that Halloween party, shall we?  It was a lot of fun, while still being simple and laid back.Halloween Designs Fanta

I was inspired by the Fanta Halloween packaging, featuring Noma Bar designs inspired by Universal’s new Mummy and their other classic monster characters.  I loved the black and white designs so much, I thought it would be fun to create a Black & White Halloween Movie Party!  The orange Fanta was the perfect pop of color in our spooky tablescape!

IMG_9196When I saw the Fanta’s Halloween packaging at Shaw’s I knew it would be perfect for our little get together! The designs are really cool! I love the classic Halloween film characters!

Fanta at Shaws I grabbed a 2-liter bottle to use in a punch recipe and a 12-pack of cans for party guests to enjoy. Fanta OrangeFanta’s irresistible fruity flavor and fun, bold colors bring scary movie night to life (and put mom in the director’s chair of creating a moment her family will love).

The punch was the centerpiece of the food table. All of the food was black and white, so the orange of the Fanta really popped!

Fanta and punch This punch recipe is super simple and only calls for 3 main ingredients (+2 if you’re adding eye balls!)

-1 2L bottle of Fanta Orange

-1 bottle (approximately 2 quarts) of Pineapple Mango juice (or other tropical pineapple juice)

-3 cups any flavor sherbet (I used Lime-Orange-Lemon)

Pour the Fanta and juice into a large punch bowl, and stir. Add the “eyeballs” if desired, and  then add in your sherbet! Done!

Fanta Halloween PunchIMG_9196

spooky punchNow, about those eyeballs…

There are a few ways you can make them. The easiest is to use lychee, and pop a blueberry in the middle. I didn’t have lychee, but I did have apples (because it’s fall in New England and we’re all up to our eyeballs in apples *pun intended* haha)  I used a melon baller to carve out little balls of apple. Then with a knife, I carved a smaller hole in the middle, and pressed the blueberries in.  If you don’t have apples  or lychee, you could also use melon or pears. apple eyeballs

I also made a yummy Black & White popcorn mix! pop secret popcornFor this I used:

-1 bag Pop Secret microwave popcorn

– 1 cup crushed chocolate sandwich cookies

– 1 bag black candy coated chocolates

–  marshmallow sauce ( 4 heaping tablespoons marshmallow cream and 3 tablespoons water. Combine in a saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring continuously, until smooth)

Black and White Popcorn MixPop popcorn according to package directions and pour into a large bowl. Pour the marshmallow sauce on top and mix well.  Add crushed cookies and candies and mix again. halloween tablescapeI set up our food and drink on the buffet which sits just below the TV. It was the perfect spot. Our guests wouldn’t miss a minute of the movie if they got up to grab more snacks!

I had picked up some white and black gauze material to use at the table cloth. Small black and white skulls, pumpkins and trees made up the rest of the decor. black and white party decor

I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for black and white snacks! I grabbed a bag of blue corn tortilla chips and paired those with queso blanco, served in a spider web bowl! black and white theme

black and white chips and dipI also made some cookies and cream marshmallow pops and white chocolate covered cookies.

black and white desserts

The punch, snacks, and sweet treats were a hit! Avery was thrilled that we let her stay up and hang out with the “big girls”

Lemonade Stand Party & 3 Simple Lemonade Recipes

“Get your dead leafs! Dead Leafs! Free Leafs! Come and get ’em! Get your dead leafs here!!”

We were outside working on the front yard. Dave and I were weeding and planting flowers.  Avery was trying to sell dead leaves to our neighbors and becoming increasingly upset when nobody stopped for their free “leafs”

“What about a Lemonade stand?” I asked.  “I guess, maybe, but I don’t understand why nobody wants these leafs!” Avery said, sadly.

So, we got to work planning a Lemonade stand, which turned into a whole party with different flavors of lemonade and snacks and decor!

First we had to get the supplies.  I had so much running around to do between summer camp, work, picking up decor and supplies, that I wasn’t sure when I’d have the time to get to the market. Fortunately, a couple weeks ago, my friend Kate told me about how she uses Peapod  and how it has changed her life.

I decided to give it a try, and I was really blown away! It’s so easy, and convenient!

You just sign up on the website, and start shopping! Shop with peapodOne of my favorite features is the Express Shop feature! You just type your list of  ingredients for a specific recipe, meal plan, etc.   into the notepad; click Start Shopping and the products matching your first item will be displayed!  There is also the Order Genius feature which will auto-fill your cart with the items you buy most frequently and even recall shopping history from Stop & Shop and Giant loyalty reward cards! It’s easy, and very cool.  You receive the same discounts as you would by shopping in-store, and you can even double your manufacturer coupons (up to $.99!)peapod checkoutOnce you’re done shopping, you choose either store pick-up or home delivery! Since I knew I’d be short on time, I tried the delivery option. I was abe to select the day and time window that would work best for me!  Our delivery arrived, and while the driver offered to bring everything in to our house, Dave and I met him at the truck and carried the bags in.

I should also note that when you sign up you receive $20 off your first order (over $75) and FREE delivery for the first 60 days! Peapod is a simple and effortless shopping experience that meets all your weekly grocery needs! It is perfect for busy moms–because we all know that it can be pure torture going grocery shopping with a gaggle of exhausted or hyper kids!

Fuze Tea Minute Maid LemonadeThe key items for our party were Minute Maid® Lemonade and FUZE® tea 12 packs–our go-to summer refreshments!  I also ordered fresh veggies, pita chips, and pre-made appetizers to help make this party very easy to put together.

Avery was excited to help with the decor, so I let her help make the sign. I purchased large white letter stickers, which she colored in pink and yellow, and then stuck on to the banner! lemonade standWe hung it up along our fence with a few pretty pink and yellow fans.

We set out the food, drinks, and paper products (in pink and yellow, of course!) And I even picked some lilies from our garden! It was perfect timing for the pink and white Star Gazers to bloom! decor

The table was set with pink gingham and yellow polka dot fabric and a strip of wide burlap ribbon to give it a rustic country feel. lemons gratitudeI found this cute lemon sign for 90% off and thought it would be perfect for this theme!  Lemonade stand party

I set out three different flavors of lemonade for guests to choose from (or try all three!) and used little chalkboard signs to label each one. The flavors were all perfect for kids and adults!lemonde bar

We had a Cranberry Limeade Spritzer, Mint Lemon Tea, and Strawberry Kiwi Lemonade! Delicious and summery!lemonades

The glasses could be garnished with fresh fruit or mint, making simple drinks appear fancy and fun! Mint Lemon Tea

This party was so easy to put together. The color scheme was fun and would work well for a summer picnic or a birthday party for kids or adults! flowersThe little details really make all the difference. The flowers, signage, pitcher filled with lemons… All were simple and inexpensive but gave the party a little something extra!

Orange Pomander Holiday Dessert Party Orange & White Holiday Dessert Party

How did the holiday season sneak up on me?I feel so unprepared this year, and have been frantically running around trying to get everything done, on top of all of Avery’s school & activities (including a dance recital last month, and another one this weekend!) and work! It’s rush, rush, rush, go, go, go! And I am feeling worn out and run down. Not good at this time of year, where feeling my best and being on top of my game is really important!

One of my favorite things about the holidays is gathering with friends and family for parties and meals. We were planning a visit to my parent’s house for an overnight, and I decided it would be nice to have a little dessert party!  I wanted to do something that mixed tradition with something new! Our family loves making Orange Pomanders (And you can read my post about what they are and how to make them, HERE) so I thought Pomanders would make great party decor. But to give the party a FRESH theme, I wanted the treats to be be made with fresh oranges! Nothing like a good boost of Vitamin C to get us through the long New England winter!

orange-pomander-christmas-treeMy parents are both nurses (well, my dad is “retired” but still works here and there) and they really need to make sure their immune systems are doing their job! I thought a wonderful way to give us all a boost would be with Mulled Orange Juice!

mulled-orange-juice-emergencrecipesAdding Emergen-C gives us the essential B Vitamins that enhance energy naturally* without caffeine! Just what we need this time of year!mulled-orange-juiceI love mulled drinks and had recently tried a mulled orange cider at a conference, so I wanted to try my hand at my own version! This recipe couldn’t be any easier.

You will need:

  • Orange Juice (64 oz carton, or fresh squeezed!)
  • 2-3 Cinnamon sticks
  • 8-10 Whole cloves
  • Emergen-C Super Orange

mulled-orange-juice-recipeAdd juice, cinnamon sticks, and cloves to a large sauce pan and simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Strain or remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks and pour into mugs. emergenc-vitamin-c-supplementAdd one packet of Emergen-C Super Orange to each 4-6oz serving. Serve warm. recipes-using-emergencAdding Emergen-C to this tasty Mulled Orange drink is an easy and delicious way to take vitamins that are important to a healthy lifestyle. And we all feel better taking Emergen-C during the winter months because our health is important to us! And I can pick it up at Walmart, so I never worry about running out!

For the place settings at the party, I used flannel napkins, wrapped in gold leather ribbon, with a sprig of fresh pine.  I made small pomanders with clementines, and used the cloves to make each guests initial! (A packet (or more!) of Emergen-C is a great party favor!)orange-christmas-treeMy Pomander Christmas tree made a great centerpiece, lit with tiny fairy lights!orange-cakeAnd then there was the cake!  Ok, I’m going to let you in on my secret!  I rarely bake cakes (Honestly, our oven is broken, so baking isn’t even an option right now) I buy plain, basted cakes from the bakery, or the market, and then I go to town making them my own! This cake was a simple market cake, with whipped cream frosting. I added slices of fresh orange, and cinnamon, and it took it from boring, to beautiful in less than 5 minutes! And the flavors were delicious! orange-pomander-decorations orange-cinnamon-creme-cakeThis party easily moves from day to night! During the day the colors are fresh and bright, but once the sun sets, it transforms to warm and cozy! So, you can use this same theme for a brunch, a lunch, or a dinner! cozy-winter-dinner-partyThe glow of the Christmas lights, the candles, and my parent’s faux-woodstove gave this such a wonderful feel! orange-pomander-tree orange-place-settingI used a long piece of flannel fabric as a table cloth, and topped it with a runner of white fur to give it something extra, something a bit unexpected. I love the way it looked! orange-white-winter-partyI topped the fur with fresh pine, and used slabs of wood as serving plates for the cookies and cake. Adding to the rustic feel that I love! winter-drink-mulled-orange

Our Big Game Snack Stadium

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #GameDayGlory #CollectiveBias

DIY Snack StadiumIf you know us, you know we kind of like sports a little bit. We go to games, wear our favorite team apparel, have team logos on our cars, had a sport themed wedding! Yeah, we love sports. This time of year we are all about FOOTBALL!! We attended our very first pro football game this year and it was a blast, but I still love watching the game at home, where it is warm, and I can eat all the snacks I want!!

Every year we have a little family party for the Big Game. This year, to make it extra special, Dave and I took on the challenge to create a Snack Stadium!! It was a fun family project and we are super proud of the outcome! Filled with our favorite SNICKERS®, Skittles®, Pepsi™, and TOSTITOS® products, our stadium is sure to be a huge hit with our friends and family!

The first step in Snack Stadium construction is the PLAN! I had a great vision of our stadium, and knew I wanted a cooler in the middle and a “TV” in it as well! You will definitely want to draw out your stadium plan, maybe you can ask your family members for their ideas! I showed my plan to Dave and he had some great ideas to help make it even better!Snack Stadium PlansAfter you’ve done all your planning, and figured out the sizes, get right to work at cutting the pieces out! I am terrible at measuring (I’m a “Maybe measure once…and have to cut at least twice” kind of gal :/ Fortunately I had some great assistants!)measure and cutWe based our stadium measurements on using a 12″ x 20″ x 3 1/2″ roasting pan as the center.  Below I have provided the “cut list” for our stadium, but yours may be different, if you’re using a different size pan in the middle.

Let me also point out that this thing is pretty big! So, you want to make sure you have the space to spread out and build it AND that it fits on your table where you plan to display it. We used Dave’s shop as our build site!

What Youll need After you have all your pieces cut, it’s helpful to tape them together to make sure everything fits and you have everything you need (We used blue painter’s tape since it holds well, but comes off easily and without damaging the foam board)Tape pieces togetherOnce you’re sure everything is perfect, you can start gluing the pieces together! We used tacky glue, but other adhesives would work as well. After the glue was dry, I chose to tape our edges. This is optional, but since we used a sparkly foam board, I thought it looked nicer than seeing the white edge of the board. It also helps reinforce the structure.  Glue and tape everything togetherSince we can stream games through our phones, I thought it would be fun to add a cell phone holder/giant stadium screen. That way, our guests wouldn’t miss a play while at the snack table! I cut out a rectangle that was the size of my phone’s screen. Then stacked foam board on on the back to the depth of the phone, then added a piece that would hold the phone in place!  It’s incredibly simple, ad added something extra to our stadium! Even if you can’t live stream games, there are many apps that show the game stats and info, which would be fun for this as well! Frame for phone

With the phone holder complete, it’s time to set up your stadium!!!Set upIt looks awesome, but I thought it needed a little something extra so I added some flags! These are simple to make. I used lollipop sticks and washi tape. Just wrap the tape around the stick, and cut to the flag shape you want! I cut small slits in the tape along the top of the stadium and inserted the sticks into the foam. stadium flagsNow it’s time to fill that stadium with snacks!!!  I lined the roasting pan with a green tablecloth to make it look like a field. I then filled it with ice, and added cans of Pepsi™! You could also use this center section, without the green lining, for any of your hot game day foods!field of ice for sodasThen we filled the other sections with SNICKERS® Minis, Skittles® XL 41 oz,  TOSTITOS® Scoops & TOSTITOS® Original

Tostitos SnacksIn the front we had cut out circles that the TOSTITOS® Chunky Salsa fit right in!  Snack Stadium treatsI think this Snack Stadium scores a TOUCHDOWN!!

Unplug with a Camp-In & Simple S’mores Bites #LetsMakeSmores

10 Minute S'mores Bites #LetsMakeSmores

Growing up, camping was big part of my summer.  I went to Girl Scout camp and went camping with family and friends in Lake George, and other spots in the Adirondacks. We camped in tents and pop up campers, and sometimes in cabins! I loved sleeping outside, swimming in the lake, hiking, and sitting around the fire telling stories and playing games.  I also loved the food!! We made whole meals in foil “packets” cooked over the camp fire, roasted hotdogs on sticks we found on our hikes, and made “Toad in a hole” for breakfast. But my favorite camp food has always been s’mores!

I had been talking to a friend recently who just took her 3 year old camping for the first time and it got me thinking about how much I want to take Avery camping. Not just for the outdoors experiences (which we all love) but also because camping gives you a chance to unplug.  You don’t have a choice if you go to a more remote location without cell service, or electrical supply. I was thinking about how nice it would be to have a few days to just hang out as a family without our phones, computers, and ipads.

Unfortunately, our weekends are jam packed with conferences for me, work for Dave, and birthday parties for Avery, so we can’t go camping any time soon. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend!

I decided to have a Camp “in” right in our living room. We put our phones away, shut down the computers, unplugged the TV, and just had quality time together!

We read stories and played board games, and of course, we ate s’mores! (Because every day should be a S’mores Day!)

Indoor camping fun Games and s'mores

Since we were indoors, we couldn’t exactly build a campfire in the middle of the living room. Well, not a real one, anyway! So I quickly cut pieces out of foam core, painted, and assembled out own little faux-fire! It must have been realistic enough (and we must be teaching her well!) because Avery kept telling us that she couldn’t go near the fire, or she would get a burn!

I decided to make s’mores bites! I had made these for Avery’s camping themed birthday party and they were a huge hit! They are so easy to make and take less than 10 minutes!

s'mores ingredients

Ingredients:

  • Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars
  • Honey Maid Graham Cracker Squares
  • Kraft’s Jet Puffed Marshmallows

Start by prepping your ingredients.

Delicious s'mores ingredients

You’ll need to chop up your Hershey’s bars and crush your Graham Crackers.

broken chocolate crushed graham

Next, you will melt your chocolate. I put mine in for 30 seconds, then removed it and stirred it up well. I then popped it back in for about 10 seconds, and at that point it was perfectly melted!

To make your S’mores bites, you just dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and then dip it into the graham cracker crumbs.

Dipped in chocolate

Place on a plate (if you can keep yourself from just eating it right then and there) and you’re done!

S'mores Bites with Hershey's Chocolate, Jet-Puffed Marshmallows and Honey Maid Graham Crackers

These bites are delicious served warm, or chilled if you need to make them ahead of time!

Simple s'mores bites - 10 minute recipe Roasting marshmallows over a DIY fake camp fire

You don’t always need a campfire to make S’mores, you can use the microwave, too!

These S’mores Bites were perfect for our family camp in and it was the perfect way for our family  to unplug and enjoy our time free of phones, and other devices!

Easy Indoor s'mores bites

I’ve shared how we create fun, tasty, and memorable experiences with S’mores. I’d love to hear your favorite way to make and enjoy S’mores!

Tinker Bell Party – #TinkandNeverBeast

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #TinkandNeverBeast #CollectiveBias Tinker Bell Party Ideas From Sweetlilyou.com!Yesterday was my birthday!!! So, I did what any 33 year old would do! I threw myself a Tinker Bell party!! Obviously!

A few days ago I stopped in to Walmart to pick up our copy of the long awaited Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast!! To say we were excited would be an understatement.  In fact, in my excitement, I had lost all sense of the date and went to Walmart on March 2nd (the day BEFORE the DVD was released) Tinker Bell and the Legend of The NeverBeast is available at Walmart. sweetlilyou.comAvery and I went back again on the 3rd and my little pixie tracked down a copy for us! She even conned me into buying her a couple more fairies to add to her growing collection.

We hurried home, and immediately popped the movie in the DVD player (Someday we’ll be high tech enough for BLU-RAY) and settled in for the cutest, sweetest, and funniest Tinker Bell movie yet! Even Dave loved it!!

And then…

I planned my party! Flowers - Tinker Bell Party Decorations. From SweetLilYou.comI wanted the party to really be about the details, and to feel like it was being held in Pixie Hollow! Avery picked out some beautiful pink flowers and I arranged them like they were spilling out of an old pitcher. Details from our Tinker Bell And The Legend of the NeverBeast party! From SweetLilYou.comI put out a “blanket” of moss, and spread acorns and pine cones around.  I also put small crystal beads all around to give the look of dew drops. Since Tink is a Tinker Fairy, I wanted to put out small objects that I would expect to see around her home like thimbles, buttons, a magnifying glass and this fancy broken dinglehopper fork. As a finishing touch, I picked up some “fairy lights” to give a hint of pixie dust! The Pixe Hollow Fairies had fun at the NeverBeast party! From SweetLilYou.comOf course, the fairies came out to join the fun! Periwinkle, Silvermist, Rosetta, and Tink!! Tinker Bell Ombre Cake! From SweetLilYou.comFor the cake I made a small, 5 layer ombre cake in Tinker Bell green with pink frosting and sparkles!  Pixie Pops and Morning Dew! Food for your Tinker Bell Party. From SweetLilYou.comI made Pixie Pops (Avery called them Fairy wands) with sprinkle coated marshmallows (dip marshmallow in water, shake off the excess, and roll in colored sugar) And Morning Dew (lemonade with lemon sparkling water and sliced lemons and limes) to quench our thirst. Tink's Fruity Flowers! Tinker Bell Fairy party food. From SweetLilYou.comThe Fairy Fruity Flowers were a big hit! Using different sized flower cookie cutters, I cut out the pineapple and kiwi, then topped with a raspberry.  Fun snacks and desserts for a Tinker Bell Fairy Party! From SweetLilYou.comI also made traditional Fairy Bread! Fairy Bread is simple, and sweet.  White bread, spread with butter, and sprinkled with nonpareills. It is a popular party treat in Australia, and I thought it would be a perfect addition to our party fare!

Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeats! A fun party theme! From sweetlilyou.comThe food was a hit! And Gruff ate the whole cake!! (Ok, not really…I may have eaten a good portion of it.  WHAT?? It’s my Birthday!!)

Now, what kind of party would this be without a fun activity and something for guests to take home?

We’re still underneath 100 feet of snow here in New England, but I wanted to do an activity that made it feel a bit more like Spring. So, I thought of a fun Fairy Garden kit that guests can make, and bring home to put out in their yard (if/when the snow melts!)

Fun Fairy Garden Crafts for a Tinker Bell Party! From SweetLilYou.comI picked up some items at the craft store that I thought would be fun for a fairy garden!
